Ensuring Responsible Mineral Sector Development in West
Africa - West Africa Regional Mining Forum, 11-13
February 2008, Conakry, Guinea
A total of 11 countries participated along with donor
agencies, mining companies and civil society, seeking to
develop regional solutions on issues such as mining
revenue management, community development, capacity
building to negotiate mining agreements, and keys to
good sector governance. With support from the World
Bank, Mano River Union countries pledged to harmonise,
as soon as possible, their fiscal regimes and mining
codes, and to jointly develop a model mineral
development agreement to better protect the interests of
the country and the community in negotiating with mining
companies.
